What makes darn tough socks so tough?

All of our socks are knit on small needle, fine gauge knitting machines. This approach produces durable, high density stitching without bulk. Less bulk means a better fit. The better the socks fits, the longer it will last. We use fine gauge, high micron merino wool. We use only 100% merino wool in the knitting of our wool socks. We do not cheapen the wool by adding nylon or polyester to the blend of the wool. We reinforce the outside and inside of the sock with nylon and lycra for added comfort, durability and fit. Throw in 3 generations of knitting know-how and you get one darn tough sock.

What are your washing instructions?

Machine wash warm, tumble or line dry, and do not bleach.

What is the difference between merino wool and coolmax?

Merino wool is a durable, natural fiber that keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Merino wool wicks moisture away from your skin and it dries very quickly. Merino wool is naturally anti-microbial which means you can wear merino wool socks for days on end without them getting that funky workout smell.

Coolmax is a durable man made fiber that is ideal for warmer temperatures. Coolmax wicks moisture away from your skin and also dries very quickly. Coolmax is an excellent alternative for those may not prefer wool or are allergic to wool fibers.

Where are the socks manufactured?

Our socks are manufactured in Northfield, Vermont.  Our raw materials are sourced globally.  That is not to say we don’t use domestic yarns in the production of our socks, because we do.  This past year we used more merino wool, nylon, lycra from the USA than from any other country.  As to whether all our raw materials are primarily made in USA, depends on many factors.  Those factors include availability of raw materials, quality of raw materials, price of those materials and capacity of our domestic suppliers to meet our needs.  When we can, our first choice is to buy domestically.
