Technology

We use both double and single cylinder machines from Italy, comprising 84 up to 200 needle machines to make a range of plain, rib, links, computer, terry and half terry styles for women, children and men. As well as a full knitting and patterning facility, there is a high pressure steam finishing process, a spray softening device and classic/hand/flat/rosso linking capabilities.

History of Socks

Even in the Stone Ages, socks (animal skins), were among the first items of clothing worn for warmth and protection. The Ancient Egyptians and Greeks took socks to another level by using matted animal hair to produce the first knitted socks. The Romans wrapped their feet with leather and woven fabrics and by the Middle Ages it had become popular to tie coloured cloth around the legs.

It was not long before socks became a symbol of wealth among the nobility but it wasn't until the invention of a knitting machine in 1589 by Reverend William Lee of Nottinghamshire, England that socks became more commonplace. By the 17th century socks defined your status with the poor wearing dull coloured woollen socks, whilst the wealthy wore colourful silk hosiery. It wasn't long before cotton socks were introduced and with the lengthening of the trouser leg from knee down to ankle, long stockings were less in demand, and shorter socks became popular. The black smoke of Industrial Revolution saw brightly coloured socks and stockings replaced by black socks, a colour that has dominated the male sock draw ever since.

The next major step forward was the introduction circular knitting machines in the 1930’s which meant that socks could be made in one piece and therefore mass produced. The invention by DuPont of Nylon in 1939 (named after New York - NY and London - Lon) revolutionized what we wear today. Until then socks were made from silk, cotton or wool but the introduction of Nylon meant that yarn could now be blended to add strength and durability. This process still occurs and is the reason that there are now technical socks on the market for every sport and activity.

Modern socks are designed and manufactured to perform with our feet and keep them in the best condition possible. Horizon is at the forefront of this technology making socks for sport, leisure, work, travel, health and fashion. What we don't know about socks isn't worth knowing!
